  7. Korg  has  introduced  a new  member  of  the Wavestation family this year.
  8. It's the  new  Wavestation  SR, a small but yet big Wavestation module in a
  9. 1u rack housing.

  13.                        A SHORT WAVETSTATION HISTORY

  16. Korg  really  had  made  a   very   interresting  piece  of  equipment when
  17. they introduced  the   Wavestation   back  in  1990.   This  rather complex
  18. sound-machine featured  a  large  PCM   ROM   with   no less than 365 waves
  19. and  samples,  vector  synthesis  and  wavesequencing  -  a  new  Korg-only
  20. principal  of  wave-manipulating.  The   Wavestation   keyboard   was  soon
  21. followed by the 2u rack-mount Wavestation  A/D.   The A/D featured an extra
  22. RAM bank, 2 analog inputs, more effects  and  - on   demand   -   more  PCM
  23. sounds.    The   extra   PCM   sounds   featured   more  'Workstation'-like
  24. sounds  like  piano,  saxophones, basses,  strings, flutes, guitars,  drums
  25. etc.  (Many of these sounds  were  taken  from  the T-series ROM.) Not very
  26. long after the introduction of the  A/D,  Korg announced the EX upgrade kit
  27. for  the  Wavestation keyboard.  This  upgrade  would add the extra effects
  28. and the new PCM sounds to the keyboard, resulting in the Wavestation EX.

  32.                            THE NEW FAMILY-MEMBER

  35. Late  summer  92  Korg  announced  the   coming   of  yet  a  new member of
  36. the Wavestaion  family;  the  Wavestation  SR.   The  Wavestation SR (or WS
  37. SR for short)  is  1u  rack  mount  module with a bit more space for sounds
  38. than it's predecessors.   The  MIDI  implementation  of  the  WS SR is also
  39. enhanced.  Let's look at the details.

  41. The  Wavestation  SR  has  3 RAM  banks  like  Wavestation A/D, and it also
  42. has a huge  ROM;  8   ROM   banks   to  choose  from.   These ROM banks are
  43. filled up with sounds taken from Korg's Sound Library and from Sound Source
  44. Unlimited's Sound Library  for  the  Wavestation  series.   The result is a
  45. huge sound bank with 550 Wavestation  performances  to choose from.  Due to
  46. this memory configuration the  WS   SR   also   implements   the  new  Bank
  47. Change MIDI command.  In this  way  the  different  ROM banks can be called
  48. from MIDI using Bank Change before a program change.

  50. The Wavestation EX and the A/D did  not  understand MIDI PAN (CC 10).  Korg
  51. said that  this  was  difficult  because  the  WS-series  could  PAN sounds
  52. elsewhere than just  between  left   and  right  internally.   On the WS SR
  53. this problem has been solved   by   using   additional  controllers for the
  54. special pannings available. Since  the  WS  SR   is only 1u it's display is
  55. not of the largest You've seen.  This   makes   the  SR  a  complex  synth-
  56. module - also when  it  comes  to  editing  sounds.    You   have  all  the
  57. parameters  from  the WS EX and  WS  A/D,  but the display  can't  show You
  58. anything but a small fraction of each  page,  making it quiet  hard  to  do
  59. some  reasonable  editing.   Korg  has  not  implemented an interface   for
  60. the  RE-1  remote   editor   that   works   so   well   with   other small-
  61. displayed  units from Korg, but this is sure due to the fact that the WS SR
  62. should  be  reviewed  as  a  playback-only Wavestation module.  The easiest
  63. pages  to  edit  is  (fortunately)   the   MULTI-pages.   This is where You
  64. make multi-timbral  setups,  and   You   can  store  and  name 32 different
  65. MultiSets as opposed to the EX and A/D's 16 unnamed MultiSets.

  68.                            THE ABILITY TO SOUND

  71. Wavestation  SR  contains all the PCM waves from  the EX and A/D and it has
  72. the same   powerful   effects    processor.     This   combined   with   32
  73. voices,  wave-sequencing,  vector  synthesis,   splits,   layers,  16  part
  74. multitimbrality and a  large  sound   library   in   ROM makes it a perfect
  75. match for all who wants  a  Wavestation   for  it's  special  sound-texture
  76. but  never wanted to tweek  the  synth-engine  to get there.  The price-tag
  77. should not scare You off either.
